This summer I got the awesome chance to hang out with the folks from Bread for The City! We decorated shopping bags for food at a number of free farmers markets, painted DC voting right hands at each center and got to garden and learn about natural ways to keep bugs out of your garden. In the last two years I have been heavily working with Peter Krsko and Albus Cavus. I cannot begin to express my gratitude for being so welcomed into this collective. It has really given me a place and a community to share my love for art and further inspire others. I would not have started my own classroom out of The Fridge without Albus Cavus, I would not have met the artist I know now without Albus Cavus. I would not have been able to travel and create large murals here in DC without the invitation from Albus Cavus. And finally but most important, I would not have been able to become part of the Perry School family and meet all the rad little kids I know and teach now, without Albus Cavus. The picture above is just one day in a full 365 days. I wish I had a picture for every day that I get to work with the collective and Peter...I am so thankful for meeting this group and for everything it has brought me. Words, Words, Words...I know they mean nothing, but the time I get to spend with these kids...cheezy, but PRICELESS!

Tim Rodgers Jr. received his BFA in graphic design at Virginia Commonwealth University. Tim is an artist and designer who currently works as the Marketing Coordinator for Little Lights Urban Ministries. This non-profit organization in Southeast Washington DC provides services to underserved children and families in Potomac Gardens public housing. As a member of Albus Cavus, he explores new ways to improve people’s lives in the district through creative expression and art.

Come join Albus Cavus and The Fridge crew Sunday for the second week of Making Mythology. This Sunday you, your friends and family can create and be inspired by an amazing mask and costume builder, Jeramie Bellmay. Jeramie creates costumes for a variety of performers including many of the outfits and hats for one of my favorites, magician David London.

Jeramie Bellmay is a multi-disciplinary artist, whose work exists in both two and three dimensions, and often crosses into the fourth. He has devoted his life to exploring mediums and utilizing them to deepen his understanding of the natural and magical world around us. His experience includes painting, sculpture, wood burning, installations, theater, as well as set, prop & costume design and construction. His ongoing body of work entitled Perception Altar most recently showed in Washington, DC at The Fridge in 2010. His work emerges out of a deep seated desire for movement, geometry, balance and play.

Albus Cavus is an international collective of artists, educators and visionaries who work and create in public space. The organization operates in DC, NJ and CA. Our installations physically beautify the neighborhoods and promote development of healthy and strong communities through interactive art and events.

Education is an important element of our work. In January 2010 we have established the first series of workshops related to public art in The Fridge. Now, the themes of the workshops include art, science, technology, urban planning, etc.

Jen Besemer creates extraordinary pictures using ordinary scissors, bits of paper, and glue. Join Jen on Sunday, March 20th at The Fridge as she shares a few of her favorite projects!

Participants will learn how to create three unique collages from a selection of everyday materials. You'll be amazed what you can make from scraps and sticky stuff!

All ages are encouraged.

Jen Besemer works with words, actions and images to expose hidden relationships (and discover new ones) between and within those media. “Misusing” text, processes and products to create camouflaged or hybrid forms, Jen comments on the entrenched systems of contemporary life and the unresolved contradictions they generate.

I can't tell you how much I look forward to the Albus Cavus Sunday Workshops. Oscar has been my Sunday School assistant, and so far he has been fabulous!

Thsi past Sunday was the final class of the Poetry workshops. J.T. Bullock ran a class on story telling and poetry. What a fun time, and you could tell that everyone had gotten better at writing poetry and more comfortable with sharing their feelings through words. I even wrote a fictional poem about He Man writing home from camp as a child, pretty fun.

Natalie Illum's poetry class started off the series of workshops. We all realized pretty quickly that Natural had a 'natural' talent with words. What a wonderful start to an amazing series of workshops!

My weekend

My weekend began with Mr. Peter and I picking one of my best little art students up to bring him to the Love Stains art opening. When we picked him up he looked so handsome! Sketch book in hand, he was ready to go.

As soon as we got there he began drawing. For the first hour he drew an amazing picture of George Washington.

Then he asked the curator J Coleman, if he could hang his piece in the show.

And then sold it! What a fun show and night!

Sunday was the Albus Cavus Poetry Workshop with Holly Bass. What a fun session! The best part was seeing this little buddy of mine walking down the street to come to class!

I think the boys team even surprised themselves with how good their MASHUP poem came out, and Yoko's poem about a fairy and a ghost was priceless. What a wonderful Sunday!

I am so excited to present the second Sunday of poery workshops with Holly Bass.
Holly Bass is a writer and multidisciplinary performer. A Cave Canem fellow, her poems have appeared in Callalou, nocturnes (re)view, Role Call (Third World Press) and The Ringing Ear. She has presented her work at respected performance spaces such as the Kennedy Center (DC), the Whitney Museum (NY) and the Experience Music Project (Seattle). She studied modern dance (under Viola Farber) and creative writing at Sarah Lawrence College before earning a Master's in Journalism from Columbia University. She has received several grants from the DC Commission on the Arts, including two Hip Hop Community Arts grants, artist fellowships and project-based grants. She is one of twenty artists nationwide to receive the 2008 Future Aesthetics grant from the Ford Foundation/Hip Hop Theater Festival.

This sunday Busboys and Poets resident writer Holly Bass will guide participants through a joyous odyssey of poetry, performance and sound. Participants will uncover new ways of infusing music into their written texts. How can we evolve our ears to enhance our writing? What do musicians, DJs and nature have to teach us about sound and communication? Special focus will be given to freeing the voice--both written and spoken--as a way to connect with audiences on a deeper level.

This Weeks Albus Cavus Workshop: Brent Talley

This Sunday ends the trio of dance workshops at the Fridge. We memorized a dance and followed it through with Kelly Mayfield. Acted out the different environments we live in through motion with Simone Jacobson, and learned the power of motion in public spaces. Come out and move with Brent Talley and friends and learn how to dance in a fun and comfortable environment this Sunday. Next Sunday kicks off the start of our poetry workshops!

Brent Talley started dancing in 1981 at the age of 11. He progressed through the urban dance styles of b-boying (breakdance), hip hop freestyle / "Social dances", and house dance as they were being created in the parks and at clubs. He choreographed much of the tour for musical group Dee Lite in 1994 for their "Dew Drops in the Garden" tour. In 1995, he founded the urban dance group Natural Elements Crew which represented all forms of urban dance with a heavy foucus on b-boying (breakdance). Brent has been featured in a bboy special on BET about the present and future state of bboying. Natural Elements has been involved with numerous community outreach activities from organizing their own food drives through having park jams, to working with the FLY organization at American University. Natural Elements has traveled to many underground dance events throughout the nation and Brent has judged bboy events all over the east coast. Brent currently serves as an Artistic Director with the urban dance group "Urban Artistry", which focuses on preserving urban dance culture through teaching history, technique, and progressive creativity. Born in Phoenix, Arizona and nurtured in Washington, DC, Simone Jacobson is a performer and independent curator of artistic talent, projects and programs. She is the founding co-director of Sulu DC, a monthly showcase of Asian and Pacific Islander American performing artists in Washington, DC. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in French Language and Literature from the University of Maryland and her writing has appeared in Beltway Poetry Quarterly as well as multiple blogs, including IHM9to5, The Lantern Review and The Couch Sessions. Her project management in the arts spans from nurturing independent artists to advising major arts institutions. She is a proud Burmese-American gypsy. She earned an MA in Arts Management at American University and is the managing editor for Words. Beats. Life: The Global Journal of Hip-Hop Culture.

Dance in Public Spaces/Moving Sculptures:
We spend our days looking straight forward, often neglecting the multi-dimensionality of the public spaces through which we absent-mindedly float. When is the last time you contemplated the sky or explored the texture of the ground? This two-hour class will begin with a group discussion and group activities that address problems, things to celebrate or interesting facets of the specific community in which the class takes place (locations vary). Through movement, the group will express their relationship to the physical space/community. The instructor will take participants through activities that promote deeper thought about issues affecting them and their immediate environment. Based on the results of these conversations, a series of movement exercises and the group dynamic, the conclusion of the workshop will involve a guerrilla performance (think flash mob and Theatre of the Oppressed) at the nearby metro station, where the public can view and interact with the final product: a "moving sculpture." This social and/or cultural commentary will be expressed through the dancers' movements and will be an ephemeral act of beauty.

I found my breed: Texel

After months of planning and research, I have concluded that I want a Texel Guines Pig! This isn't the one I'm getting, I wish it was he's so cute, but I want a black or grey one.
Texel cavy is characterized by the ringlets or curls that make up it's long, soft coat. Curls are to be found all over the body, even on the belly. The Texel has a short, compact body, with a broad,well-rounded head. The Texel was accepted as a recognized breed by the American Rabbit Breeders Association, Inc. in (1998)
This breed was originally imported from England.

Art - Each event will feature an exposition of local artistry in the front lounge at ONE. The event on the 29th will feature the art of Asad "ULTRA" Walker. Asad, aka ULTRA is one of the most respected and old school Graph artists in the DC area! Come see the legend bring his style to canvas!

Food - There will be a complementary tapas buffet from 9-10:30! Come early and eat with us.

We're getting ready for our Classroom fundraiser for the new session of Albus Cavus Classes. BUY A TICKET NOW!

Please join us for an amazing evening of art and performance and help support the next semester of classes.
Funds raised will be used to pay for scholarships, supplies, instructors and space rental.
Classes will be held every Sunday for five months starting in January, and will be taught by local artists in dance, poetry, music, graphic design, art and science.

Today I went thrift store shopping with my Best Friend. We took the bus up Georgia Ave and then hit one on 14th and Spring. Later I was reminded of a lady I had met once with Philippa Hughes. Running around one day, she asked if I didn't mind her making a quick stop. That stop was into an amazing little house full of some of the most amazing vintage clothes I have ever seen. Dresses, hats. coats...a dream. Here are a few of my favorites.....

NC Botanical Gardens

Before we left Chapel Hill, we stopped at the North Carolina Botanical Gardens.

Their carnivorous plant collection is known as one of the best in the Southeast. Numerous species of pitcher plants, sundews, and butterworts are found in the southeastern United States as are Venus' flytraps.

Every fall the display gardens at the North Carolina Botanical Garden sprout a crop of unique creations by North Carolina artists. A group of one-of-a kind sculptures placed amid the native wildflowers and shrubs delight garden visitors for two months.

The Carolina Inn is a beautiful and well-known icon on the UNC campus in downtown Chapel Hill that architecturally represents both the colonial and antebellum South. The 1924 design incorporates late 18th century elements from George Washington's Mount Vernon.
Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a member of the prestigious National Trust's Historic Hotels of America, The Carolina Inn offers an atmosphere of elegance and the spirit of tradition. Furnished with antiques, North Carolina made furniture, interesting artwork and historical images, this hotel on the UNC campus has offered guests the finest lodging, fine dining, and excellent hospitality for more than eight decades.

I can't wait to make my own bow out of towles in my bathroom at home! It's made out of two wash clothes, one is folded four times into a skinny rectangular band and the other is folded like an acordion shape. Wrap the band around the acordion, and tuck behind tuck towles already hanging. Super Cute!

Honfleur Gallery is hosting LIKENESS, the brainchild of DC based photographer, Joshua Yospyn. The exhibition includes twenty artists (ten photographers + ten visual/street artists) with an end result of ten original portraits + ten interpretations of that portrait.

The visual/street artists’ will present their interpretation of the original photographed displayed side by side the photographers image.
